Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
When the standard lightbulb was invented, naturally, we applauded. But science means progress - and the world is now looking for alternative ways to light up our homes. This is one of the best we've found. Inside the Sun Jar is a highly efficient solar cell, a rechargeable battery and three low energy LED lamps. When the jar is placed in direct sunlight, the solar cell creates an electrical current that charges the battery over a few hours. When it gets dark or lights are turned off, this energy powers the three natural-coloured LED lamps inside the jar. The frosted glass of the jar then diffuses the light, giving the appearance of trapped sunlight.

5 out of 5 stars Winter sun   December 31, 2008

I gave my wife one of these as a fun/surprise Christmas present and - luckily - she was thrilled! She likes a nightlight when I'm away and this is perfect. The warm glow is surprisingly comforting and brings a little bit of summer into the house on miserable winter nights. Anything that makes someone laugh out loud when they see it is worth its weight in gold.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty but does it work?   December 6, 2008

I bought my sun jar recently and was delighted with it's lovely warm orange glow. I also loved the idea of being able to leave it outside to recharge and have it glowing again by nightfall. I've been disappointed however with how little it recharged. I tried changing the battery but the same problem occurs - the first night it glows brightly and is lovely. The second a little less...etc...etc until there is nothing left. I live in the Canary Islands and we have quite a bit of sun even in winter - if it doesn't work very well here it must be worse in the UK. I've ended up charging the battery in a charger because the jar is pretty but that does rather defeat the object of a solar powered light!

5 out of 5 stars Candle light   December 1, 2008

I brought the sun jar because when i work nights my girlfriend likes a light on so i thought we could try this to save on electricity and still give her the comfort from the light! When it arrived we was very happy with the quality of the light, its a nice jar and would look good on any window ledge! Like the other reviewers have said its waterproof with a good seal so can be left outside if you wish.
It automatically comes on when it gets dark unless you switch it off (switch is under the lid) and it gives out a nice glow which is romantic and like a candle light but its not enough light for you to be able to read!
The cheapest i found this was 15 on play.com free delivery

5 out of 5 stars Romance in a jar   October 18, 2008

I was given a sun jar recently, and it really is absolutely beautiful. There isn't enough light to read by, but the glow it gives is so very comforting and cosy, and for atmospheric mood lighting, I can't imagine anything nicer. It makes a wonderful nightlight - very warm and soothing, and because it doesn't plug into the wall, you don't need to worry about frying your lampshades or wasting electricity.

Its being a jar very much adds to the romance of it; almost as if you went on a picnic that day, went into the woods with a jar to catch tadpoles or butterflies and caught the sun instead - really sort of magical. Its being solar powered means it will last for an age, so the initial cost is ultimately well worth it.

This is a lovely, lovely little thing, and it's very muchly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly useful   October 8, 2008

I can't give this 5 stars, because I was honestly hoping for a little more light. I really wanted something to read by, and there is no way this is bright enough.

With that in mind though, this has been surprisingly useful. It's dim enough that if my partner is home late I can leave it on the bedside table and still sleep. It does give a welcoming glow left on a windowledge, and is attractive enough to leave on the windowledge to charge up. I've used it as lighting whilst watching TV in an evening. I've even used it to go get logs after dark.

It feels a little expensive compared to solar-powered garden lights, which actually give more light I think. But this is a really nicely made and pleasing object that I'm happy to give housespace to!
